Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance

A larger placement needs a precise product, layer and loss story.

BHSI’s US property offering includes All Risk, single-peril earthquake/flood/wind, builders risk, inland marine and other specialist property products. [1]

Hedge’s take

BHSI is worth considering for substantial US property, casualty and transactional placements with a clearly defined need. Its published appetite guides provide useful screening detail: minimum premiums, target classes and primary-versus-excess distinctions. Those particulars are more helpful than treating the Berkshire Hathaway name as a universal commercial market.

The detail that can change the fit

A target class in one BHSI product does not establish acceptance in another. The property and casualty guides have different restrictions, while transactional policies address defined deal risks rather than ordinary operating liabilities.

Beyond the product list

What stands out, and why it matters.

Property size and participation should be screened early.

BHSI’s February 2026 US property guide lists a $100,000 minimum premium for its share and primary or excess structures. [2]

Compare that starting point with the size of the proposed participation before preparing a full submission. A large schedule does not imply that one carrier must insure every layer; specify the perils, attachment and percentage being sought.

The same occupancy can receive a different answer across lines.

BHSI’s July 2026 US casualty guide lists habitational among its avoided classes. [3] [2]

That does not decide the property answer: the separate property guide describes a qualifying excess-only habitational role. Ask the specific product question. A possible property participation should not be presented as evidence of casualty appetite for the same insured.

Transactional coverage follows a defined deal risk.

BHSI’s transactional overview separates representations and warranties, tax, contingent liability and class-action settlement products. [4]

Identify what uncertainty is being transferred and how the agreement allocates it. A known tax issue and an unknown breach of a seller’s representation need different underwriting and should not be merged into a generic transaction-insurance request.

Pressure-test the proposal

Questions to resolve before binding.

Use these illustrative scenarios to review a proposal. They are questions to ask, not statements that a loss is covered.

An apartment account needs property and liability

Is BHSI being considered only for a qualifying property layer, and which separate market will address casualty?

A buyer identifies a specific tax uncertainty

Does the request belong in tax insurance rather than representations-and-warranties coverage, and what analysis supports it?

A large property schedule needs a follow layer

What exact participation, perils and attachment are being requested, and how do they align with lead terms?

A better submission starts here.

Hedge’s preparation guidance for this placement:

  • Identify the specific US product, account size and proposed share or layer rather than seeking an undifferentiated group quote.
  • For property or casualty, provide detailed values or revenue, locations, operations, requested terms, loss information and underlying coverage.
  • For transactional liability, identify the transaction, known risk, diligence completed, contractual allocation and timing.

Include the named insured, locations, requested lines and limits, effective date, existing applications and available loss information. Start with what you have; we can identify what is missing.
