The placement brief.

Published scope

  • The group offers distinct commercial truck, E&S, inland marine, management liability, moving/storage and surety businesses; choose the actual product before applying a rule. [1]
  • The E&S booklet separates binding GL, liquor liability and property from follow-form excess and umbrella. [3]
  • Moving/storage coverage separates motor truck cargo for goods in transit from warehouse legal liability for stored customer goods. [4]
  • Occupational accident is described for independent contractors/owner-operators. A separate workers-compensation offering describes casual laborers, fleet drivers/sole proprietors and corporate WC for qualifying motor carriers. [5] [6]

Limits, exclusions and conditions

  • The current E&S booklet advertises binding liability up to $2 million each occurrence/$2 million aggregate; property is typically up to $10 million per location/$15 million per policy, depending on spread, location and occupancy. [3]
  • Binding is described as nonadmitted in all 50 states. The binding restaurant target lists alcohol receipts of 30% or less; bars/taverns appearing in excess appetite do not establish binding eligibility. [3]
  • E&S excess advertises up to $10 million limits, participation within the first $50 million excess of primary and surplus-lines availability in all 50 states and DC. [3]
  • Occupational accident is unavailable in North Carolina and New Jersey, with limitations in California and New York. [5]
  • Corporate workers compensation for motor carriers requires 15 or more owner-operators enrolled in occupational accident, at least three years of WC history and an experience modification under 1.35. [6]
  • The described casual-labor/related WC program is exclusively available through the National Association of Independent Truckers and written on TransGuard Insurance Company of America paper. Do not generalize that access route or insurer to every IAT product. [6]
  • Warehouse legal liability depends on legal liability for stored goods and may have contractual-liability limitations; motor truck cargo usually ends when goods are delivered or placed into storage. Compare the actual handoff and contract. [4]
  • The cargo page relates limits to the maximum value per load; warehouse limits relate to the maximum value accumulated in storage. [4]
What still needs confirmation
  • The reviewed product pages do not supply one universal required submission packet or loss-run period for IAT's separate business lines.
  • Confirm the actual E&S program, policy forms, insurer, attachments and class/state restrictions for the requested account.
  • The specific occupational-accident benefit schedule, CA/NY restrictions and eligibility conditions need confirmation; occupational accident is not proof that a WC obligation is satisfied.
  • For the NAIT-related WC product, verify enrollment and the applicable contractual/program channel before treating it as a direct carrier placement.

Hedge’s take

IAT brings together several distinct insurance businesses. Its E&S offering separates binding products from excess casualty, while its transportation materials distinguish the vehicle, the goods being moved and the people doing the work. That structure rewards a submission that explains who owns the property, who is responsible for it and which insurance layer is needed.

The detail that can change the fit

Do not read the group’s product list as one package or assume an E&S binding appetite applies to an excess request. For transportation accounts, distinguish employee injury coverage from owner-operator benefits and cargo from warehouse legal liability. Each addresses a different part of the operation.

Beyond the product list

What stands out, and why it matters.

Binding and excess casualty have different appetites.

IAT’s E&S guide separates a general liability, liquor liability and property Binding offering from follow-form excess and umbrella. The binding restaurant target lists alcohol receipts of 30% or less, while the excess targets also name bars and taverns. [3]

A hospitality account should be described with its actual alcohol mix, hours and activities. The excess list does not establish eligibility for the underlying binding package. For a liability tower, compare the proposed underlying forms, attachment and exclusions as well as the excess limit.

Transit and storage change the coverage question.

IAT distinguishes cargo covering property being transported from warehouse legal liability addressing the warehouse’s responsibility for customers’ goods in storage. [4]

Map the handoff from loading to transit to short-term and long-term storage. Compare maximum values at each point and the contracts defining responsibility. A stored-goods loss is not automatically handled like a truck cargo loss, particularly where warehouse liability or assumed obligations must be established.

Owner-operator benefits are not the same placement as employee injury coverage.

IAT’s workers compensation page describes coverage for casual laborers and a corporate workers compensation offering for motor carriers’ employee workforces, subject to stated criteria. [6]

Separate the people in the operation by their actual arrangements and the coverage requested. Do not treat an occupational accident benefit schedule as proof that every employee or state workers compensation obligation is addressed. The proposed program, contracts and applicable requirements need to align.

Maximum cargo value and maximum warehouse value serve different limits.

The cargo and warehouse page ties motor truck cargo limits to the maximum value per load and warehouse limits to the maximum value stored. [4]

A mover with modest individual shipments can still accumulate substantial customer property at one warehouse. Request both figures and consider seasonal accumulation, rather than copying a per-truck limit into the storage section.

Published scope

The product facts behind the view.

  • IAT lists commercial truck, E&S, inland marine, management liability, moving and storage, reinsurance and surety among its business lines. [1]
  • Its E&S Binding offering includes general liability, liquor liability and property, while a separate Excess Casualty offering includes follow-form excess and umbrella. [3]
  • IAT distinguishes motor truck cargo for goods in transit from warehouse legal liability for customers’ stored goods. [4]
  • Its occupational accident product addresses independent contractors and owner-operators; the page states that coverage is unavailable in North Carolina and New Jersey and has limitations in California and New York. [5]
Pressure-test the proposal

Questions to resolve before binding.

Use these illustrative scenarios to review a proposal. They are questions to ask, not statements that a loss is covered.

A restaurant earns a substantial share of receipts from alcohol

Which IAT E&S offering is being proposed, and does the disclosed alcohol mix fit that offering’s appetite? Evaluate the primary package and excess layer separately.

A shipment stays in the mover’s warehouse between addresses

When does transit protection end and warehouse legal liability begin under the proposed forms? Review the storage agreement, custody timeline and values accumulated at the facility.

An owner-operator uses casual help to unload

Who is employing or contracting with the helper, and what injury coverage is proposed for each person? Compare the occupational accident and workers compensation arrangements instead of assuming the driver’s protection extends to the crew.

Hedge’s preparation guidance for this placement:

  • Identify the business line and requested layer. For E&S, provide operations, receipts, payroll, locations, liquor receipts if applicable, currently valued losses and the underlying policy schedule for excess requests.
  • For moving or storage, provide maximum value per load and per warehouse, storage and transit durations, bills of lading, warehouse contracts and the points where responsibility changes.
  • For trucking, distinguish employee drivers, owner-operators and casual labor; provide states of operation, contracts, fleet and driver information, and the injury coverage currently arranged for each group.

Include the named insured, locations, requested lines and limits, effective date, existing applications and available loss information. Start with what you have; we can identify what is missing.
